"I have been blessed in my life with the
ability and the will power to compete at a high level in football. As
a senior I was elected as a team captain and after the season I was
rewarded with a leadership award as well as being an all district
fullback. God then lead me to Baylor University where I continued my
playing career and was a part of two of the most successful seasons
in Baylor football history. Then God’s plans changed drastically. I
had a history of minor head injuries and after a severe concussion in
Houston during our first bowl game in 16 years; I began to have more
and more frequent concussions in which the severity began to increase
as well. After another severe concussion the week of Texas A&M
the team doctor and trainer began to discuss my future as a football
player because my long-term health began to come into question. After
weeks of debating and gathering as much information as I could, I
made a decision to stop playing the game I had been playing since I
was in 3rd grade. Part of me wanted to know why God had
given me such a unique platform just to take it away in 2 short
years, but I knew God had a different and much better plan.
Jeremiah
29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for
you’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm
you, plans to give you hope and a future.” I took comfort in the
truth, that is God’s word, and trusted his bigger and better plan.
Although it was hard at times to grasp what exactly God’s plan
might be for me, I knew that faith in him would allow me to have
peace in my life. Since my decision to stop playing, opportunities
have opened up for me to start a new chapter in my life. I have
always wanted to be a college coach and because the coaches at Baylor
noticed my work ethic they allowed me to stay with the program and be
a student coach. I do not know what exactly God has planned for my
life but I do know from my experiences that I can always trust and
lean on him through the good and bad times." Brad Willard
